A large room is divided into cubicles with dental chairs and the attendant implements

The 24 new dental chairs that were recently delivered to the School of Dentistry at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) with support from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) will meet two different needs simultaneously.

At the same time they serve as an educational tool for students, they will strengthen the School’s central focus on social work. Through its clinics, NKUA’s School of Dentistry provides low-cost dental care to 9,000 oncology patients and low-income people, as well as children with disabilities, performing 30,000 dental procedures annually.

The procurement of the two dozen new chairs, which meet European Union environmental protection standards for aerosols, are part of SNF’s broader effort to strengthen Greece’s health sector, its more than $500 million Health Initiative.

As part of the €500,000 grant to the NKUA School of Dentistry, SNF also supports the procurement, still in progress, of 40 state-of-the-art educational simulators.
