In the 100 years since its founding, Yorkshire Cancer Research has contributed to the development of new cancer treatments—including, as early as 1929, chemotherapy—and drugs, new surgical techniques, deeper understanding of carcinogens in workplaces and food, and insights into cancer genetics.
The innovations of its first century continue today, with Active Together, its exercise-based pre- and rehabilitation program for people with cancer which recently won the award for innovation at the UK’s Advancing Healthcare Awards.
Yorkshire Cancer Research has found that participants in Active Together saw a 10% boost in survival rates for people with certain types of cancer, and a growing body of evidence from other quarters indicates that exercise can meaningfully help check cancer. Since it was launched in 2022, more than 2,000 people have participated in the program.
As part of its Global Health Initiative (GHI), SNF has supported the expansion of the Active Together program to reach more people, as well as the implementation of a related exchange program between Yorkshire Cancer Research and Regeneration & Progress, a Greek nonprofit exclusively supported by SNF.
